About this course
The CGC started in the year 1977 when a group of golf enthusiasts started playing golf in the grounds belonging to the Coimbatore Jail. A nine hole course with browns, right in the heart of the city was used. Leading Coimbatore industrialist K.Rajagopal of the the Lakshmi Mills Group, is the key person behind this endeavor of bringing quality golf to Coimbatore.
His efforts to contributing time & resources led to the formation of the Coimbatore Golf Foundation, a non-profit firm that acquired 150 acres of land on the outskirts of Coimbatore. The late K. Rajagopal dedicated a lot of time to develop the course that he loved. He was widely known in golfing circles not only in India but around the world as “Captain”.
The present course at Chettipalayam is located 16 kilometers from the city and is accessible by various roads & started operations in 1985. Known for its immaculate greens which are super quick (8 to 9.5 on the stimpmeter) especially during tournaments & located in a windy corridor that can turn a innocuous looking 100 yard wedge shot into a ”challenging” adventure- this is a course to be respected & enjoyed. With an excellent clubhouse this is a golfers course.
This course has the unique distinction of being the first “Private” course to be built in the country after World War II.
